What is Kinesio Tape?

Kinesio Taping is a revolutionary therapeutic method that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process. It helps to stabilize an injured area of the body, supporting the affected area – but without immobilising the joints.

It is a thin, stretchy, elastic cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, so kinesio tape allows for better movement and less restrictions.

Kinesio tape was invented in Japan by Dr Kenzo Kase, who was looking for an alternative to traditional athletic tapes. For the first decade after its introduction, Japanese practitioners were the main users of the tape. By 1988 the tape had been adopted by Japanese Olympic team, before spreading across the world.

Kinesio tape can benefit a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, plus inflammatory conditions. The main benefit is that it doesn’t limit movement or circulation, and yet can gently stabilize the injured tissue.

It is often used on the knees, shoulders, calves, shins, elbows and wrists, and can be applied around an injured joint, tendon or muscle to assist in reducing swelling and prevent additional complications.

Kinesio tape prolongs the benefits of manual therapy and is a tool frequently used by the skilled team at Evans Osteopaths. It helps to extend the patient’s benefits after receiving manipulation. So, it’s as if your still receiving the positive effects of your osteopathic treatment long after you’ve left the treatment room!

Who can benefit from using Kinesio Tape?

  • anyone living a sedentary lifestyle, which contributes to neck or back pain.
  • athletes, or those who enjoy physical activity on a less regular basis – including runners, cyclists, golfers or those who play tennis
  • anyone who has a job that requires repetitive movements that can cause overuse and inflammation, e.g. construction workers, mechanics, landscapers, etc
  •  those with joint pains such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, etc

Kinesio taping can also provide a short term solution if an important race or sporting event is looming. Professional athletes often use kinesio taping to enhance their sporting performance when struggling with an injury.

At Evans Osteopaths, we frequently use Kinesio Tape for the following issues;

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shin splints
  • Runner’s knee
  • Hamstring pulls
