Pregnancy is a truly amazing and joyous experience. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many women at all and instead, pregnancy brings a great deal of pain & discomfort.
During pregnancy, the body undergoes a significant amount of change physical, hormonal and emotional and all within a short time.Pain & discomfort experienced is a sign that the body is struggling to deal with the demands being placed on the body by the growing baby. It’s no wonder really when the body has to adapt to carry up to 20kg of extra weight, including the baby, waters & placenta!
As the expectant mother’s body weight increases, ligaments start to loosen which affects her centre of gravity and subsequently her posture. This will have a direct impact on her muscles, joints and the rest of the body, such as the digestive system, diaphragm and internal organs. These changes may cause discomfort and pain to the expectant mother.
Some of the common problems experienced are listed below:
- shoulder & neck pain
- hip pain
- breathing issues
- nausea & vomiting
Osteopathic treatment provides a safe and effective form of pain relief for expectant mothers at all stages of pregnancy. It can also assist by preparing the body for the demands of labour.
Osteopathic treatment is also extremely beneficial to help the mother recover post-delivery. After giving birth, the body not only has to recover from the changes made during pregnancy but also from the effects of delivery and cope with the demands of having a new baby.
During childbirth, the mother’s pelvis must accommodate to allow the baby’s head to descend and therefore can become torsioned. This torsion often corrects itself, but when severe it can remain to disrupt spinal and pelvic mechanics. Unresolved childbirth stresses in the mother can contribute to ongoing back problems, period problems, incontinence, constipation, headaches and more.
Caring for a baby in itself is extremely exhausting and can place enormous strain on the back. Osteopathic treatment can help the mother to return to normal after birth by releasing strains from both pregnancy and labour. This allows her to relax and enjoy her new baby.
